Privacy policy
Iron Crab ("we") makes the mobile apps Tartil and Jandalah. They have no accounts, no advertising and no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs. This page lists everything they collect.
What we collect: the listening heartbeat
While you are actually listening (playing and not muted), the app sends one small message a minute to our server. It contains only:

From the connection, our server works out your country and then discards your IP address. It is never written to a log or database. When the app is stopped or muted it sends nothing. A message that fails is dropped, never queued or retried.
Why: to know how many people listen, from which countries, and to what, so we can improve the content.
How long: individual heartbeats are deleted after 90 days. Hourly totals per install ID (country and minutes listened) are kept to show trends over time.
Location, used only on your phone (both apps)
At prayer time both apps pause the broadcast for the Athan, and they show the time of the next prayer. If you allow it, the app reads your approximate (coarse) location and calculates prayer times on the phone. Your location is never sent to us or to anyone else. You can decline, or revoke it at any time in Android settings, and the app keeps reciting.
Tartil
Recitation audio is streamed from our media server and from mp3quran.net and saved on your phone so it can play offline. Like any website, those servers see your IP address when they send a file.
Jandalah
Besides the heartbeat and the optional on-phone location above, Jandalah sends nothing. To keep every listener on the same second, it asks a web server for the current time. That request carries no information about you.
Permissions
- Internet: to stream audio and send the heartbeat.
- Foreground service / media playback / wake lock: to keep playing with the screen off.
- Notifications: to show the playback control.
- Approximate location (optional): prayer times for the Athan, calculated on the phone. You can pick a city instead.
Sharing
We do not sell, rent or share this data. It is stored on our own server at DigitalOcean, our hosting provider. We will disclose it only if the law requires us to.
Children
The apps are suitable for all ages and collect no personal information from anyone, including children.
Your choices and rights
Mute or stop the app to stop the heartbeat. Uninstall it to delete the install ID. To have the data for your install ID deleted, email us and we will explain how to find the ID in the app.
